New to college

I recently found out that I had Avoidant Personality Disorder. I only have it very mildly when around comfortable situations, but when in new situations and especially when in groups, it becomes very hard on me.

I'm going to college now, and commuting about 1 hour one-way (by train), and I have remained totally introverted and withdrawn. It's even worse, considering that all of my old friends have moved elsewhere, I'm constantly in large, very impersonal lecture halls, and nobody in college will randomly start talking with you. I have to take all the initiative, now, which is extremely difficult since I'm very (unnecessarily) self conscious and shy.

What is your advice on my situation? I really want to meet a few people that I can stay long-term friends with. Just keep in mind that living in a dorm isn't an option (for monetary reasons and because I'd be too homesick).[/u]
