The idea of 'love shyness' is the product of one psychologist who did some bad science many decades ago and has since profited from the book sales as result of the popularity of his idea.

I'm curious and I think u should back ur claim up w/objective information. I will be interested to read ur post. Philly2bits, I happen to think that the questions being asked are intuitive and introspective. U must ask these types of questions if u wish to understand the demographics of a group. Maybe the OP is trying to compile some infromation for some type of research. Good for him! He's looking into something and asking questions about it. He's exploring. My point is that he didn't do something for people with 'love shyness'. He invented the very concept of 'love shyness' by means of some seriously bad research a long time ago which even he hasn't bothered to reproduce.

It's clearly an appealing concept since it sells his books so well, but no medical professional acknowledges it as a genuine disorder. This is not because nobody cares about 'love shy' men. It's because what little research he did was poorly done and the problems of this alleged disorder are already covered by things like avpd.

I think most SAD men aren't afraid of love, they are just afraid to start conversations with women. With gender roles the way they are, men usually have to start the conversation with a woman to begin a relationship. This is very tough for a SAD guy to do. Gilmartin was just proving this fact, that men who are shy enough struggle with having dating lives and some of them never date at all because they can't make the first move enough times, or at all. Another thing I believe he wanted to show was that shy men struggle in the dating world more than shy women because of gender roles in the dating world. For example, a woman can go to a bar and just sit there and wait for men to walk up to her, while if a man sits there he may be sitting there all night. People don't realize how vital that "first move" is, and how tough it is to do for shy people. The fact that women don't have to make that first move nearly as often as men, or not at all, which many of them can get away with, it makes dating much easier for women. Men usually can't get away with never making the first move.

Personally I tend to think love-shyness is due to general pessimism/negativity/scepticism & fears (mostly imagined; which is pessimism about the future). Also another form of negativity is "finicky-ness" or "picky-ness", where you find the smallest excuse whatsoever, not to engage/cohabitate/etc with the opposite sex.

I think the reason love-shy people come up with the pessimism/negativity/skepticism is because of fear. Love-shy people will look for any excuse or reason to get out of walking up to the opposite sex and talking to them because they are afraid. Fear can be a powerful thing.
